Check DMCA: Is Your Website Affected?

• By Nguyen Thanh Khiet

Worried that your website might be affected by a DMCA takedown? Here are 3 reliable methods to check if your site has been hit by a DMCA complaint.

Method 1: Check Google Search Console

Google Search Console is the most reliable way to check DMCA status:

  1. Log in to Google Search Console
  2. Select your property (website)
  3. Go to "Security & Manual Actions" in the left menu
  4. Click on "Manual Actions"
  5. Check for any DMCA-related notifications
Note: You can also check "Removals" section to see if any URLs have been removed due to legal requests.

Method 2: Search on Google

A quick Google search can reveal DMCA issues:

  1. Go to Google.com
  2. Search for your website's exact URL or brand name
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the search results
  4. Look for the message: "Some results may have been removed under data protection law in Europe" or "In response to a complaint..."

If you see this message, click the link to see which URLs were affected.

Method 3: Check Lumen Database

Lumen Database is a public archive of all DMCA complaints sent to Google:

  1. Visit lumendatabase.org
  2. Enter your domain name in the search box
  3. Review any complaints that mention your website
  4. Check the "Infringing URLs" section to see affected pages

Important:

Appearing in Lumen Database does not automatically mean your URLs have been removed from Google. Google only removes content when the DMCA complaint is valid. Always verify through Google Search Console.

Signs Your Website May Be Affected

  • 📉 Sudden traffic drop: Significant decrease in organic traffic
  • 🔍 Pages not indexing: Your pages don't appear in Google search
  • 📧 Google notification: Email from Google about legal removal
  • ⚠️ Search Console alerts: Manual action or security issue notifications

What to Do If You're Affected

If you discover your website has been hit by a DMCA takedown:

  1. Don't panic - You have legal options
  2. Document everything - Save the complaint details
  3. Assess validity - Determine if the complaint is legitimate or false
  4. File a counter notice - If the complaint is invalid, you can appeal
