Report DMCA: File a Copyright Takedown

• By Nguyen Thanh Khiet

If someone has copied your original content without permission, you have the right to report DMCA and request removal. This guide explains how to file a legitimate DMCA takedown notice.

Warning: Filing a false DMCA complaint is illegal and can result in legal consequences. Only file if you genuinely own the copyright to the content.

When to File a DMCA Report

You should file a DMCA takedown notice when:

  • ✅ Someone copied your original article, image, or video
  • ✅ Your copyrighted content appears on another website without permission
  • ✅ Your creative work is being used commercially without license
  • ✅ You own the copyright and can prove it

Do NOT File DMCA If:

  • ❌ You don't own the copyright
  • ❌ The use qualifies as "fair use"
  • ❌ You're trying to remove negative reviews or criticism
  • ❌ The content is in the public domain
  • ❌ You're trying to harm a competitor unfairly

How to Report DMCA to Google

Step 1: Gather Evidence

Before filing, collect:

  • URL of the infringing content
  • URL of your original content (with timestamp if possible)
  • Proof of ownership (registration, creation date, etc.)

Step 2: Access Google's DMCA Form

Go to Google's Legal Removal Request page.

Step 3: Fill Out the Form

You'll need to provide:

  1. Contact information: Your name, company, email, address
  2. Copyrighted work: Description and URL of your original content
  3. Infringing URLs: The pages that copied your content
  4. Sworn statement: Declare under penalty of perjury that you own the copyright
  5. Signature: Your electronic or physical signature

Step 4: Submit and Wait

Google will:

  1. Review your complaint (typically 1-7 days)
  2. Notify the website owner
  3. Remove the content if the complaint is valid
  4. Archive the complaint in Lumen Database
